‘Returning Grazers to the Land’ Workshop | Oct. 13, 2017 | Bloomington
The Ecological Service Livestock Network, an SFA networking group, hosted a free workshop for professional land mangers and restoration ecologists, “Returning Grazers to the Land,” Oct. 13 at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
This free SFA Soil Health Network event explored the art and science of using service livestock to manage landscapes in ecologically and economically effective ways, as well as promote the use of service livestock as a practical and effective land management tool. Recent projects on Minneapolis Parks and City of St. Paul land were highlighted.
Presenters included Jake Langeslag of Goat Dispatch, Kyle Johnson of Diversity Landworks and restoration ecologist Steve Thomforde.
Farm Tour & Pasture Walk | Sept. 22, 2017 | Hewitt, Minn.
SFA and NRCS co-sponsored a farm tour & pasture walk Sept. 22, at Freyholtz Oak Ridge Farm, 46081 131st Ave, Hewitt. This free event discussed cover crops, alternative forages, rotational grazing, no-till pasture renovation and outwintering of livestock.
Plowville Conservation Field Day | Sept. 19, 2017 | Dodge Center
Over 120 people attended Dodge Soil and Water Conservation District’s Plowville’s 65th Anniversary and Conservation Field Day Sept. 19 in Dodge Center.
This free SFA Soil Health Network event included a full day of programming on the establishment, care and management of cover crops and speakers U. of M. Worthington’s Liz Stahl, farmer Tom Cotter, farmer Ed McNamara, field and equipment demonstrations, and much more. The first Plowville event, in 1952, showcased farm technology and drew political candidates Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson.
Soil Health Field Day | Sept. 15, 2017 | Hastings
Washington County Conservation District hosted a free Soil Health Field Day Sept. 15 at Tim Behrends’ farm in Hastings.
This free SFA Soil Health Network event included discussion by NRCS staff on soil health, U. of M. researchers on the perennial intermediate wheatgrass Kernza, and Behrends on his cover crops and agricultural management.
Cover Crop Field Day | Sept. 5, 2017 | Luverne, Minn.
Rock County SWCD and NRCS sponsored a Cover Crop and Soil Health Field Day on Sept. 5 at Tom Fick’s Family Farm, 1157 110th Ave, Luverne.
This free SFA Soil Health Network event featured several expert producers and scientists, including SFA Livestock & Grazing Specialist Kent Solberg, SFA pasture research farmer Allen Deutz, soil scientist Jennifer Hahn, agronomist Liz Stahl, and farmers Tom Fick, Terry Aukes and Brent Fluit.

Central Lakes Field Day | Aug. 25, 2017 | Staples, Minn.
Central Lakes College Ag and Energy Center hosted a Field Day on Aug. 25 at 26505 County Road 2, Staples. This SFA Soil Health Network event included a SFA Forage Council-sponsored open house at the CLC agricultural center and tour of its Byron Township site as well as additional programming.
CLC researchers highlighted the many different aspects of research and community/industry partners connected with the center. Demonstrations on water quality and agronomic research, irrigation, local foods integration, children’s programming, drone demonstration, tractor rides, forage and pasture tours, and more were included.
Wintering Livestock | March 4, 2017 | Verndale, Minn.
SFA hosted another edition of its short course on Wintering Livestock on March 4 at Seven Pines Farm, 18618 County Rd. 23, Verndale.
At the workshop, SFA Livestock & Grazing Specialist Kent Solberg led a farm tour reviewing low-cost wintering techniques for layers, hogs and cattle. Attendees toured hoophouse structures for layers, a deep-straw system for hogs, low-cost housing for sows, outwintering via bale grazing for cattle, windbreak options and cold weather watering systems, and more.
