WEARABLE GARLIC? Sounds strange, but it’s true*. Welcome to the second edition of 2008 Stinky News from MN Garlic Festival! Paper has been made for centuries from onion skin, and wearable paper clothing made its debut in the 60’s. NOW garlic skin is peeled from the bulb (no cruelty to animals here, although more sensitive types vow that they can hear the garlic screaming) and boiled with unpasteurized cider vinegar for added coloring and corrective PH for contact with human skin. The result? Some GORGEOUS bikinis! Disclaimer: This product has not been tested for durability in water. ALSO - and maybe even more practical for the rest of us - skilled Minnesota artisans have been turning painted and glazed garlic bulbs and cloves into elegant earrings, handsome headdresses (tracing back to both Scandinavian and African roots), beautiful belly button plugs, and stylish shoes. Elves and faeries in the vicinity have been reported to be creating fanciful prototypes of jewelry made from the bulbils**, but they, as usual, are being rather secretive. They are known to be disdainful of the human race in general, considering us rather too “cloddish” to appreciate the delicacy of their art. Speaking of art, we’re offering YOUTH ART WORKSHOPS! Bring one to your community for free! 4H, YMCA, churches, camps, home school groups and others: we will present a workshop for your young people in which they will explore the question, "What is your vision for the future of rural Minnesota?" and create artwork about it, which can then be entered in the. . . MN GARLIC FESTIVAL YOUTH ART COMPETITION Workshops are led by Whitney Hohman, an artist and recent graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, and will focus on sustainability, a healthy environment, vital rural communities, family farms and locally produced foods. All skill levels are encouraged, from beginners on up. Whitney will gear the workshop for your particular age group, and will provide materials. The participants will create a drawing or painting during the workshop that they can immediately enter in the Youth Art Competition. All works will be on exhibit at MN Garlic festival in the Arts Gazebo on August 16, 2008, and awards will be presented that day.
