ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
Our Head of Entertainment, Mariénne Kreitlow, has announced this year's schedule of onstage performances and chef demos! It will be one heck of a Taiko-drumming, garlic-singing, spoon-playing, moon-lighting, belly-dancing, mask-wearing day.
See more at: http://www.sfa-mn.org/garlicfest/entertainment.html.
WHEN IT'S GARLIC SCAPING TIME IN MINNESOTA
Just like the song says****, this is the time of year when garlic growers across the state remove the scapes from the garlic plants. With no sign of the invasive species problem from last year (see http://www.sfa-mn.org/garlicfest/stinky_news_july09.html#1), garlic growers report that the flower stalks that appear on northern hardneck garlic, the "scapes", are shooting up a bit earlier this season. Farmers remove the scapes early on, so that the plant puts more energy back into the bulb*****.
GARLIC FESTIVAL IN THE NEWS
We're in Edible Twin Cities Magazine's "Roadside Diaries" once again ("You'll want to pack some mints for this event"), in the lovely Summer edition.
The Star Tribune included us in an article on Unconventional Conventions: "The savory seasoner feared by vampires and your Scandinavian granny actually tastes pretty good in ice cream".

Headnotes:
*"Headline" reminds us of an interesting garlic tidbit: The term "bulb" is commonly used in reference to the part of garlic plant that contains those scrumptious cloves. But, to the garlic snob, it is more botanically correct to refer to the individual cloves as "bulbs" - each one is a bulb that can produce a plant - and the part that plebeians normally call a "bulb" is actually the HEAD. And, homonymically speaking, "headlines" are the vertical striae on the outside of the garlic head**.
** We made that last bit up, just so that we could use "homonymically" and "striae" in the same sentence.
*** Obviously, a "garlic head" is also, homonymically speaking, a homo sapiens who loves garlic, also known as an alliumphiliac.
**** "When it's Garlic Scaping Time in Minnesota", by Al Lium, copyright 1975.
(The melody is a rip-off of "Red River Valley")
"When it's garlic scaping time in Minnesota,
When it's garlic scaping time in Minnesota,
When it's garlic scaping time in Minnesota,
Well, it's garlic scaping time in Minnesota."
(Repeat until someone forces you to stop)
***** Actually, it's a "head" (see above*). Oddly enough, the flower produced on an uncut scape produces "seeds" that aren't actually true seeds, but rather are called bulbils, which are actually miniature garlic cloves, which are actually bulbs. There will be a test on all this material.
