Colleagues in Conservation,
Here’s a topic for consideration/discussion offered by Grant Herfindahl, member of the Western Chapter of the Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota:
On the topic of grazing CRP acres:
Grazing is discriminated against as a tool for contract maintenance. Regulations for the CRP program are found in the Code of Federal Regulations Part 7 1410. Part 1410.63 is where it is spelled out that a payment reduction will apply.
The prairie eco-system was developed in part by two great forces; fire and grazing. We now recognize the role of fire by offering it as a mid-contract maintenance tool and offering cost-share for burning.
Grazing should be offered the same role and offered cost shares and not suffer a payment reduction. Flash grazing is recognized by the fish and wildlife service as a tool for prairie restoration and the CRP should offer grazing a management tool without financial penalties to the landowner. _________________ Minnesota Dairy Initiative
