All workshops run from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Registration starts at 9:00 am.  The price of the workshop is $25 (if registered at least 7 days before the workshop) or $35 at the door.  This includes lunch and breaks featuring organic foods.

Speaker Bios & Contact Information

Harriet Behar is the MOSES (Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (www.mosesorganic.org) organic outreach coordinator, where she promotes, enhances and expands organic agriculture through networking with farmers, educators and others interested in organic agriculture.  She helps in organizing the Upper Midwest Organic Farming Conference (Feb 21-23 2008), gives classes, attends field days, write articles and answer a toll-free organic info line, 888-551-4769. In addition, she has been an organic inspector for 18 years, visiting more than 2000 organic farms and processing facilities around the world.  Harriet and her husband have been certified organic growers of vegetables and herbs since 1989 and have an on-farm, state licensed dehydration facility and a small commercial honey operation.

Joe Borgerding farms with his wife Toni and 3 sons near Elrosa, MN in western Stearns County. Our farm is 140 - 150 cows managed organically on 400 owned acres and 100 rented alfalfa acres.  Joe started his transition to sustainable, biological, balanced agronomy in 1996 and eventually transitioned the dairy herd to organic in 2004.

Rod Dybing

Dennis Johnson grew up on an 80 acre, 30 Jersey cow Minnesota dairy farm, which supported a family with 5 children.  He received a Bachelor of Science degree from NDSU, and a Masters of Science and Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.  He has worked as a dairy scientist at the West Central Research and Outreach Center since 1968.  His research and outreach responsibilities are in dairy with special emphasis on low input systems (grazing, cross-breeding, out wintering, etc.)

Dr. Hubert Karreman, VMDis a dairy veterinarian working with 80certified organic farms in Lancaster, PA and consults for hundreds of organic herds across the country. In 2005, he was appointed to a 5 year term on the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) and is Chair of its Livestock Committee. He has written many chapters for textbooks on organic dairy health care and has authored a book, Treating Dairy Cows Naturally published by Acres USA (www.acresusa.com).

Jim Paulson is a Regional Extension Educator for Dairy with offices in Hutchinson, MN. Jim grew up on a diversified livestock farm in Winona county Minnesota and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota. Jim holds a Master degree in Dairy Science with a minor in Agronomy. Jim specializes in dairy nutrition and forages and also operates a small dairy.
