Part of sustainability means playing a role in decision-making forums that affect our lives. This summer and fall include important opportunities for SFA members to speak up about policies and programs affecting conservation, water quality, protection of our food-producing resources and enhancement of our rural communities. I encourage you to attend and bring a friend or family member; listen, learn and speak up. Here are two examples of ways to make your voice heard:
- Gov. Mark Dayton is convening a series of town hall meetings to engage citizens in each region of the state to discuss strategies for improving Minnesota’s water quality. The first is 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 31 in Rochester. Click here for the full schedule, locations and corresponding information.
- The U.S. House Agriculture Committee is holding an official Farm Bill Listening Session from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 3 at FarmFest. Committee Chairperson K. Michael Conway and Ranking Member Congressman Collin Peterson will be present. Farmfest is located at Gilfillan Estates, 28366 County Hwy 13, Morgan. Info: 202.225.2171.
Also, thank you to the hundreds of people who have renewed their SFA membership, become members, or contributed to SFA’s Pasture Project match. This response has been very heartening in my first months on the job. Please know that you’ve made a real difference in promoting our values for clean air and water and healthy soil – all critical to the family farmers and community people who depend upon them.
I welcome those who haven’t yet renewed or joined SFA to take a moment and do so today. An SFA membership is an excellent investment in the future of our food producing resources. Thanks for considering this request!
