The Upper Midwest Garlic Growers, a networking group of the Sustainable Farming Association, has announced its 2017 Garlic Field Day will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sat., July 1, 2017, at garlic-growing operations in Red Wing and West Concord, Minn.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Hawk’s Brain Garlic, 32742 200th Ave, Red Wing. Farmer Susan Johnson has been growing garlic for 20 years, and sells it at the Red Wing Farmers’ Market, the Minnesota Garlic Festival and the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. With a wide range of varieties in her repertoire, Hawk’s Brain Garlic has repeatedly won awards in the Minnesota Garlic Festival’s Garlic Growing Contest.
After a potluck lunch at Bay Point Park in Red Wing, attendees will drive to Coffman Garlic & Apples, 56115 120th Ave, West Concord, where farmers Tom and Maria Coffman grow nine varieties of softneck & hardneck garlic for seed stock and table. They also raise Honeycrisp apples and sell their garlic at the Minnesota Garlic Festival, where they won Best in Show in 2017.
